If we are to believe the movies most couples, married or not, have a song. That one special tune that defines the depth of their love or solidifies a special moment in their life. In typical atypical fashion, Katie and I don't have a song. We have a playlist. Most of them are not sappy love songs. Rather they are a collection of melodies that we have picked up over the years that remind us of Gods goodness,
His love, our love and friendship, and the adventures we have had. A few of these songs are
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers
A Page is Turned by Bebo Norman
Hush Now (Stella's Tarantella) by Over the Rhine
Dancing in the Minefields by Andrew Peterson
The Biscuit of Zazzamarandabo by Archibald Asparagus
Each of these tunes holds a special place in our relationship. But nothing beats the first song we connected through.
The scene was I-25 north bound on the Raton pass. We were still dating; we were not even engaged. We'd been in the car for almost 10 hours, most of which had been on the flat, endless planes of Texas. We were now surrounded by the towering Rocky Mountains. Katie had put in a mix CD we had made for the trip and Andrew Peterson's Nothing to Say began to play. We drove and we worshipped. This was the first time in her adult years that Katie had seen the Rockies and her first response was awe and wonder. This is one of my first great memories with her.
I am looking forward to our trip to Colorado in the near future. I am looking forward to remembering the good memories and making new ones, to praising our God as we wonder and awe at His beautiful creation. I love the beauty of the East Texas piney woods and the vast open spaces of West Texas, but nothing stirs up wonder in my heart like mountains. When surrounded by so much beauty, I truly feel I have nothing more to say.
